Bosnia – Total loans in Republika Srpska grew 9% in 9M 2012 while ratio of NPLs grew moderately; name of Volksbank a.d. officially changed to “Sberbank a.d.” to reflect acquisition of Volksbank International by Sberbank


On 19 December consolidated statistics for 30 September 2012 from the Banking Agency of Republika Srpska (Агенција за банкарство Републике Српске) were made public.  The statistics indicate that total loans in the banking sector in Republika Srpska at the end of September 2012 amounted to 4.5 billion BAM, 9% higher than the level of 4.1 billion BAM at the beginning of 2012.  (1 EUR = 1.95583 BAM.)  As of 30 September non-performing loans (неквалитетни кредити) amounted to 544.2 million BAM, and the proportion of NPLs to all loans was 12.03%, up from 11.85% at 30 June 2012 and 11.46% at the beginning of 2012, but still well below the figures for 30 June 2011 (16.53%) and for the beginning of 2011 (17.14%).

In other news, on 19 December the Republika Srpska Securities Commission (Комисија за хартије од вриједности Републике Српске) announced that the name of the commercial bank “Volksbank a.d. Banja Luka” had been officially changed to “Sberbank a.d. Banja Luka”.  This bank, first incorporated in 1999 as “Zepter Komerc banka a.d. Banja Luka”, was bought in July 2007 by Volksbank International AG of Vienna, and the name was changed to “Volksbank a.d. Banja Luka”.  On 15 February 2012 the Russian banking giant Sberbank (ОАО “Сбербанк России”) completed its acquisition of 100% of Volksbank International AG, which was renamed to “Sberbank Europe AG”, and the name change of the subsidiary in Banja Luka reflects the change in ownership of the parent corporation.
